What is PAYG Withholding?
PAYG (Pay As You Go) withholding is the system where your employer deducts tax from your pay and sends it directly to the ATO on your behalf. The amount withheld depends on your earnings, residency status, whether you've claimed the tax-free threshold, and any HELP debt.
At tax time, if too much was withheld you'll get a refund — if too little, you'll have a tax bill. This calculator helps you estimate what to expect each pay period.
Package vs. Base Salary — What's the Difference?
Base salary is what you're paid before super. Your employer adds 12% SGC on top.
Total package (super inclusive) means your contract figure already includes the 12% employer super contribution. In this case, your take-home will be lower than if super was on top.
Example — $100,000 package:
Base salary = $100,000 ÷ 1.12 = $89,286
Super = $100,000 − $89,286 = $10,714
Tax is withheld on the $89,286 base, not the full package.
Quick Tips for New Employees
Claim the tax-free threshold with only ONE employer to avoid under-withheld tax.
If you have HELP/HECS debt, tick the box on your TFN declaration so repayments are withheld automatically.
Always complete a TFN declaration when starting a new job — otherwise your employer withholds at the top rate (47%).
If you earn over $101,000 and don't hold private hospital cover, the Medicare Levy Surcharge (1%–1.5%) also applies.
